Transgenic Corn in Mexico

Ecological Approach

Toxicological Approach

ID: 140805

IIn my personal opinion regarding the transgenic corn controversy in Mexico, is that it should not be grown in Mexico nor any other country in Meso America. Particularly because of the negative impact to the environment and the food chain worldwide and in the future genetics. This transgenic crop has been found especially in Oaxaca and Puebla in Mexico. According to the research team at the Berkeley School in the University of California.

Also, according to Greenpeace Press release the transgenic corn grown and imported from the United States has "contaminated a global center of biological diversity of corn". Along with confirming that corn varieties from its communities in the state of Oaxaca have suffered some sort of contamination of 3% to 10%. Which as a result some environmentalist state that after the arrival of GE's it could potentially disrupt the genome of naturally bred corn. The contamination that has occurred in Mexico has been due to the pollen that spreads affecting other crops surrounding it as well. It's not a simple matter of loosing diversity and losing money as well such as it happened in the United States in the year 1970 when the U.S crop income dropped and lost 1 billion because of the lack in corn diversity. Which could happen in Mexico as well in the future. Although, something irreversible could occur as well in our environment and future lives. Crop diversity according to Green Peace "is essential in the continuing pursuit of food crops varieties resistant to new pests, diseases, and changing climatic and environmental conditions.

The disavantages are:

1. Resistance among the populations to pests.

2. Genetic material exchange between the transgenic crop and the non transgenic crop.

3. Bt crops impact on nontarget species such as the monarch butterfly due to Bt corn pollen.
